Darth Maul Returns in New Star Wars Shadow Lord Prequel Series

The galaxy’s most resilient survivor is back. Lucasfilm has officially confirmed a brand-new Darth Maul animated series will premiere on Disney+ in 2026. This project marks a historic first for the franchise. It is the first animated show to feature a villain as the primary lead. Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will finally give fans a deep look into the character’s darkest years.

Bridging the Gap in the Timeline

The show begins roughly one year after The Clone Wars. This “Shadow Lord” era fills a major gap in the timeline. It follows Maul as he navigates the “Dark Times” after the Jedi fall. The series acts as a direct prequel to Solo: A Star Wars Story. It reveals how the discarded Sith apprentice built the terrifying Crimson Dawn syndicate.

The Return of Sam Witwer

Fans will be thrilled to hear that Sam Witwer is returning. He will again provide the iconic voice for Maul. Witwer has worked closely with Dave Filoni during production. They aim to show Maul’s transition from a broken warrior to a calculating leader. Witwer describes the series as “edgy and jagged.” The dark visual style reflects Maul’s view of a galaxy now drained of its color.

A New Noir-Inspired Setting: Janix

The series primarily takes place on a new planet called Janix. This neon-lit world has managed to remain untouched by the Empire. This “space noir” environment creates the perfect backdrop for a crime story. To prepare fans, Marvel is releasing a prequel comic. Star Wars: Shadow of Maul hits shelves on March 4, 2026. This five-issue run introduces the planet’s lawmen, Captain Brander Lawson and the droid Two Boots.

What to Expect from the Plot

Maul will not travel alone in his journey. Reports indicate he will take on a young Twi’lek apprentice. This follows a haunting Force vision he experiences early in the story. The series also features his remaining Mandalorian loyalists, such as Rook Kast. Maul will even clash with Imperial Inquisitors like Marrok. This is more than a story about lightsaber duels. It is a deep dive into the criminal maneuvering required to rule the underworld.
